Providence, RI—May 20, 2005—The Exeter West Greenwich Community Partnership Team, a program of the
RI Rural Outreach Program presents, "Silence the Violence" open mike and poetry slam on Saturday May 21st from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. in the auditorium at Exeter West Greenwich High School, 930 Nooseneck Rd,
West Greenwich. Doors open at 6pm; performers should arrive by 6:30pm to participate. Admission is $4 and is open to the public.
The proceeds from this event will benefit the Exeter West Greenwich High School Community Partnership Team, an inspiring group of young adults organizing events to raise awareness around issues of violence.
The team is co-facilitated by the Sexual Assault & Trauma Resource Center, the Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center, and the Domestic Violence Resource Center of South County.
"Silence the Violence promises an exciting night of art and culture with the goal of raising community awareness about issues of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and child abuse," says Peg
Langhammer, executive director, SATRC. For the curious, a poetry slam is a three round competition in which poets are scored on a scale of one to
ten. There is no audition and you do not have to be published to participate. The only requirement is that you have something to say in its most unrestrained, raw and passionate form. Parents of younger children
should be cautioned that this is an intense, uncensored experience. For performance artists who don't wish to slam there is an open mike with no time limits.
In addition to student performers, guests can look forward to:
- Paintings on display by Sherry Davis that depict her own struggles with abuse
- Powerful and personal works from the Clotheslines Project of the YMCA
- Youth Troup variety show performance by the Broad Street Studio Road Show
- Performances from members of the Providence art's co-op, AS220, including: Jared Paul, 2004 Grandslam Champ and 5 time Providence Slam Team Member; Corrina Bain, 2003 Worcester
Grandslam Champ; Christopher Johnson, multi-time slam team member with New Jersey Trenton; Kevin Barry, Emcee, 2005 surprise storm poet; David Gonsalez, member of the 2001Providence National Poetry Slam Team.
Volunteer advocates from the Victims of Crime Helpline will be available throughout the performances.
The Sexual Assault & Trauma Resource Center of Rhode Island (SATRC) is the only agency in Rhode Island organized specifically to deal with issues of sexual assault as a community concern. SATRC's mission is to
reduce the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence, and to support and advocate for those affected by it. |
