(January 8, 2007). A three-week training session, beginning on January 8, will prepare a new group of volunteers to respond to calls from the state's hotline for victims of crime.
Eighteen participants will be trained to respond to requests for assistance from callers; meeting survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and hate crimes directly in hospitals and police stations. Advocates
provide crisis intervention, support, and referrals to victims.
Last year, 280 victims received personal support from an advocate at a hospital or police station in Rhode
Island. Currently, 45 volunteers are available to provide assistance.
The Victims of Crime Helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week as a collaborative effort
between Day One, the Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center, and the member agencies of the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The Helpline is available to victims, their friends and families, as well as to
