For Survivors

Across America, a sexual assault occurs every 2 and half minutes. Sexual abuse can have a long-term and damaging effect on your self-worth. Additionally, it can negatively affect the other areas of your life as well, such as trust, future relationships, and your mental and emotional health. Many victims of sexual abuse are ashamed of what happened to them and may even think it is their fault. Sexual abuse is never the fault of the victims and you should never feel ashamed. Not surprisingly, many victims have a difficult time talking about the abuse; most never report the crime. Some never tell anyone, not even their closest friends. If you have been the victim of sexual violence, there are many things you can do to help you cope with the abuse and to start healing.

Here are just a few…

TALK to Someone – It may be hard to open up about such a painful experience, but talking can often be the first step toward healing. Talk to a trusted friend or a family member.

Find a counselor or therapist – Day One and many community counselors specialize in helping sexual abuse survivors and their family members deal with the common issues of sexual abuse victims, such as trust, relationships, and anger.

Join a support group – Your counselor can give you referrals to support groups. Talking to other survivors of sexual abuse who suffered the same type of abuse (child sexual abuse, date assault, stranger assault, etc.) can be very helpful in helping survivors express their feelings.
