PROVIDENCE — City police officers are undergoing training on handling cases of sexual assault and severe physical
abuse.
The training, yesterday and today, is being done by Day One, the Sexual Assault and Trauma Resource Center, at Day One's offices on Medway Street on the East Side.
Day One wants the officers to take
a multidisciplinary approach to cases of sexual assault on adults and children and related matters. Topics include interviewing victims and witnesses, collection of evidence, medical evaluation, services to victims, information
sharing and related issues.
Officers will be acquainted with Day One's programs, including the Children's Advocacy Center and the Sexual Assault Response Team.
Among the instructors are representatives of
the attorney general's office, who are discussing investigatory methods and recent Supreme Court cases on child sexual abuse.
Day One, established in 1973 as the Rhode Island Rape Crisis Center, has as its mission the
reduction of sexual assault and violence.
