The Center, which opened in 1993, is a program of Day One. The CAC works as a team with police, the Attorney General's Office, Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), victim advocates, medical professionals, and mental health providers to help children and families who have experienced the abuse of a child. We work as a team, along with you and your child, to make a difficult time as comfortable as possible. Our primary goal is to assure the safety and well being of your child. Until the opening of the Children's Advocacy Center in December 1993, children disclosing sexual abuse were faced with having to disclose their abuse over and over again to the many professionals who become involved in these cases. A child might be interviewed initially by a DCYF Child Protection Investigator, followed by a police officer, a police detective, medical personnel, therapists, prosecutors and others. Having to recount the trauma of their abuse so many times often results in additional trauma. The information on these pages will help you to understand what the Children's Advocacy Center can offer, how to prepare your child for an interview at the Center, what will take place on the day of the interview, and follow-up case management and support services available.
